Kennesaw Elementary - What great adventures come in books? Let's discover some this month. Visit the library and learn to navigate your way through the "card catalog computer," down the aisles of many adventures, and to an adventure of your own choice. Sign up for your library card while on your visit. Create your own outdoor epic adventure on a hike, campout, or maybe at a ball field or park. Make a costume for one of the characters from your favorite story. At the pack meeting the boys can perform some of their favorite stories and share some of their adventures with the pack. Take part in Pedro's "Say Yes to Reading" program in Boy's Life. This might also be a good month to work on the Communication or Computer belt loop and pin. Encourage the boys to have the courage to search for, discover, and share adventure this month.

Kennesaw Elementary - As we approach Thanksgiving, let us spread seeds of kindness in the form of multiple small service projects. Helping others gives the boys the opportunity to see the bounty produced by spreading many small seeds of kindness and encourages compassion. The boys can discover that just as the large strong oak tree came from the small acorn, big things can happen from spreading small seeds of kindness and charity. Conduct a food drive or collect coats and gloves for those in need; report your hours to Good Turn for America. Work on the Citizenship belt loop and pin.

We will be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program. Please bring in new, unwrapped toys to our meeting. We will also be passing our Pinewood Derby cars at this meeting.

Pack Meeting: Holiday Lights - Monday, December 15, 2008 at 6:30 PM

Kennesaw Elementary - The Star of Bethlehem, the Miracle of the Lamp, the Morning Star that enlightened Buddha, the bonfires of Yule: many of our holiday traditions this month involve lights. Share your holiday traditions with your pack and den: lights on a Christmas tree, candles on a Menorah for Chanukah, or on a Kinara for Kwanzaa. Boys can be stars this month by brightening someone's holiday season with a gift of compassion. As a pack or den, visit a nursing home, preschool, or children's ward and sing holiday favorites. End your outing by sharing cookies that the boys decorated. Help those less fortunate with a service project or toy drive. How about a holiday campfire at your pack meeting? This is great month to work on the Language and Culture belt loop and pin or the Heritages belt loop and pin.

It showcases the best of Cobb's three Scouting Disticts: Covered Bridge, Foothills, and Mountain Lake which began humbly as a training event to show adult leaders that their units could easily camp comfortably in the outdoors throughout the winter months and has grown into an adult "Camporee". Bring your curiosity, warm clothes, best "Scout Spirit" and other adult members of your unit for a great weekend of FUN, fellowship, and inspiration!!

SWC is open to all adult Leaders from the Scoutmaster with 25 years experience to the Den Leader who just signed up at School Night for Scouting. The program is organized to emulate the Boy Scout Patrol method, with Patrols of 6-10 members. Traditionally, its held in February to coincide with the month of Scouting's birthday. In our Pack, the Blue & Gold replaces the February Pack meeting, and includes a catered meal, door prizes, a dessert contest, and the "crossing-over" ceremony for the Pack's Webelo II scouts.

The "Crossing-Over" ceremony recognizes the scouts who are leaving the Pack and possibly moving on to Boy Scouts. They receive their Arrow of Light, which is the highest award possible for a Cub Scout to earn, in a very impressive and solemn ceremony.

Tickets are $15, and one ticket covers an entire family. You do not need to purchase a ticket for each person, just one for you entire family. Tickets can be purchased at the Pack meeting preceeding the Banquet. See your den leader for tickets.

Den meeting plans could include field trips to learn about different occupations of interest to the boys and playing games centered on different jobs.
Day Camp - Monday, June 01, 2009 at 9:00 AM

Kennesaw United Methodist Church - Attention Pack 002! It's time to make some plans for your cub scout for the upcoming summer. It will be here before we know it.

Cub scout day camp is June 1-5 at Kennesaw United Methodist Church on Ben King Road. For our Tiger parents or parents whose child has not been to day camp, it is a blast for the kids. Each day is full of different activities and crafts.

It takes place Monday through Friday from 9:00am - 3:30pm. The boys will be doing fun activities all day long. They have a schedule that is followed and each activity is a lot of fun. Some of the activities include BBs, archery, cooking, story telling, games, working with tools, knots, knives and, last year, a rock wall. The boys have a terrific time!! In addition, they begin earning lots of requirements for their promoted rank!

The cost of day camp is as follows (FROM LAST YEAR, THIS WILL BE UPDATED IF NECESSARY):

* $80 per cub scout
* $60 per scout if their parent is a volunteer for the whole week
* $50 per pixie (pixies are sisters and younger brothers of a scout but they must be potty trained and 3 yrs old and the parent must be volunteering at Day Camp)

Not to leave out the older sisters or brothers- they can be den chiefs or teen apprentices. Den chiefs are boy scouts and teen apprentices are girls that are 12yrs and older. They will work the day camp and help out where needed.

In order for our scouts to go to day camp and have a great time, we need adult volunteers also. For every 3 cub scouts who want to attend day camp, there must be one adult volunteer. You can work all week at day camp or find someone who will split the week with you. We will have the applications and health forms to fill out at pack meetings or they can be dropped off at your house. The applications must be turned into the district in April.

Sneak-A-Peek will be Sunday, May 31st, 2009 from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm at KUMC. Parents & Scouts are invited to meet their Den Leaders, pick up their camp shirts and carpool tags, and check out camp.

To register your scout for day camp, click on this link http://www.mountainlakedistrict.com/csdaycamp.htm and fill out and print the application at the bottom of the page. All applications and fees need to be turned in to Barbel Woodard by our March Pack Meeting.

Space Derby - Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Legacy Park Amphitheater - We need your help. We need to know how many of you are seriously planning on attending this event. They run 4 at a time and the elimination chart has to be carefully planned. Please send an email to your leader to RSVP for the event. If you decide not to attend for some reason, and have not worked on your rocket, we would appreciate you returning the kit. The pack has paid $4 for each kit and without the string track they really don't work. The pack will be happy to return them.

We will need help with the setup and take down of this event. Setup will start at the amphitheatre at 8 am. It takes a while to get the strings attached, properly tightened, level, etc.

Here is the help we will need:

Setup - 3-4 people beginning at 8am

Awards - We need someone to help make design awards. We will be ordering medals for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall. There are no rank place awards for this event because of the typically lower turnout. This may change if we get as many entries as kits ordered!

Judges for design awards - 3 people

Registration help - 2 people to come a few minutes early and help with registration. Registration will start promptly at 10am.

Rubberband winders - we will need 4 people (one for every track) and we may need to switch off if they get tired. Each rocket gets wound 100 times.

Breakdown - 2-3 parents to help take down the track and load it back into the truck for transport to storage.

Your help will be greatly appreciated and make for a fun event for the boys. If you are willing to help, please email your den leader.

Summer Pool Party - Saturday, August 01, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Legacy Park Main Pool - All Scouts are invited to attend.

This is a recruiting event, so if you or your Scout knows a boy entering first through fourth grade this year, please invite them to come along. Boys who invite a friend who joins the Pack will earn the Recruiter patch, which they get to wear on their uniform.

Webelos I Scouts should be sure to attend, as they will be completing the requirements for their Aquanaut activity pins. This is a great way for a new Webelo to get their first pin under their belt right away.

Also, please remember that your scout can submit a t-shirt design in the Pack's search for a new class-B t-shirt. The winning design will earn the Scout who submits it a great prize: their very own camping tent!

We also need two adult volunteers for the Pool party: one to bring popsicles for the boys, and one (usually Webelo I parent) to run the Aquanaut Activity Pin exercises in the pool.

We will need between 50 and 100 popsicles (whatever size box is available; you can never have too many of them). The volunteer will purchase the popsicles (you will be reimbursed for the cost) and bring them to the pool party in a cooler.

Running the Aquanaut exercises is also very easy, as its just a matter of following the requirements as laid out in the Webelos Handbook. Lisa and I will be there to lend a hand should you need it.

If you can help with either of these important positions, please let me know by emailing secretary@pack002.com.
