How to Participate in a Color Guard

Preparation

Color guard should be in two columns at the back of the venue. Each column should contain from three to six boys. The U.S. flag is held by the flag bearer at the front of the right-hand column. The state or Pack flag is held by the flag bearer at the front of the left-hand column. The boy behind the U.S. flag bearer is the Color Guard Commander and may call cadence. In younger dens, that role may be fulfilled by the den leader, who participates beside or behind the color guard.

Presenting the Colors

Cubmaster (in a loud, clear voice): "Attention! Will the audience please rise?" All in attendance rise. The Color Guard prepares to move out.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, advance." Color Guard Commander or Den leader slowly and softly says "Ready". Bearers lift flags poles off of the floor to a carrying position. Everyone in the Color Guard should lift their left foot. When the Commander sees that the bearers are ready, he says "Left" and all the boys step off together on their left foot. At the Color Guard's option, the Commander may continue to call cadence. The Den leader may also join the rear of the Color Guard to "even it out".

When the Color Guard reaches the front of the room and is about to separate to each side of the stage, the left column (with the Pack or state flag) stops to allow the right column with the U.S. flag to cross in front. The U.S. flag is always placed on the left-hand side of the stage or front of the room, as you face it. When the right-hand column is clear, the left-hand column proceeds to the right-hand side of the stage. Each bearer should stand next to the flag stand, without placing the flag into the stand at this time. The remaining members of each column should stand beside the bearer.

Cubmaster: "Scout salute." Everyone in uniform except for the Color Guard salutes. Attendees not in uniform should remove their hat and place their hand over their heart.

Cubmaster: "Please repeat with me the Pledge of Allegiance." The Color Guard stands at attention. The Pack or state flag is lowered so that its pole rests on the floor. The U.S. flag remains in the carrying position. All in attendance say the Pledge. The members of the Color Guard do not salute or recite the Pledge.

Cubmaster: "To." All in attendance drop their salute or hand over their heart. The Pack or state flag is returned to the carrying position.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, post the colors." The Pack or state flag is placed in its stand. All members of that column turn and face the U.S. flag. When they are standing still, the U.S. flag is placed in its stand. All members of the U.S. flag's column turn toward the U.S. flag, and all members of the Color Guard briefly salute it.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, dismissed." All members of the Color Guard take their seats.

Retiring the Colors

Cubmaster (in a loud, clear voice): "Will the audience please rise?" All rise, including the Color Guard.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, prepare to advance." Color Guard members line up in front of the flag, with the U.S. flag bearer and guard in front of the Pack or state flag bearer and guard.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, salute." Color Guard only salutes.

Cubmaster: "To." Color Guard drops salute.

Cubmaster: "Color Guard, advance." Color Guard columns each walk up and stand next to their respective flag, with the flag bearer nearest the flag.

Cubmaster: "Retire the colors." The Color Guard lifts the flags from the stands and starts toward the back of the venue in columns.

Cubmaster: "Scout salute." All except Color Guard salute the U.S. flags, and hold their salute until the flag has left the room.

Cubmaster: "To. (pause) Dismissed." All drop salute and Pack meeting is over.
