How to Hold a Pinewood Derby

Preparation

  • Request the cafeteria from Kennesaw Elementary for the Saturday of the Derby from 7:30 am through 2:00 pm when the use request is submitted to the school in September.

  • Request the cafeteria from Kennesaw Elementary for the Friday prior to the Derby from 6:00 pm through 8:00 pm when the use request is submitted to the school in September, for setup and test runs.

  • Recruit a Pinewood Derby Event Chair at least six months before the Derby.

  • Remind the Kennesaw Elementary Front Office about the Derby two weeks prior to the event.

  • Make arrangements with a school custodian to help with unlocking and locking the school on the Saturday of the Derby two weeks prior to the event.

  • Recruit the following volunteers at least two weeks before the Derby:

    • Check-In Judge #1 - Handles the registration of cars and competitors, checking for regulation compliance on the registered cars, including size, materials, and weight.
    • Check-In Judge #2 - Assists Check-In Judge #1.
    • Set-up Volunteer #1 - Helps set up and pre-test the track on the Friday evening before the Derby.
    • Set-up Volunteer #2 - Helps set up and pre-test the track on the Friday evening before the Derby.
    • Timer #1 - Operates the timing system and computer program during the event.
    • Timer #2 - Operates the timing system and computer program during the event.
    • Car Wrangler #1 - Manages the transportation and staging of the cars at the beginning of each race.
    • Car Wrangler #2 - Manages the transportation and staging of the cars at the beginning of each race.
    • Car Wrangler #3 - Manages the transportation and staging of the cars at the beginning of each race.
    • Pit Mechanic #1 - Operates a pit area where there are tools and supplies available for last minute repairs to registered cars.
    • Pit Mechanic #2 - Operates a pit area where there are tools and supplies available for last minute repairs to registered cars.
    • Design Judge #1 - Reviews all registered cars and assigns winners for the various design awards.
    • Design Judge #2 - Reviews all registered cars and assigns winners for the various design awards.
