How to Hold a School Flag Day Ceremony

Flag Day is a recognition of the birthday of Scouting that takes place area elementary schools. Scouts wear their uniforms to school that day, and participate in raising the flag that day. School Flag day usually takes place on February 8th.

For Flag day we need adult to volunteer as representatives at KES and Big Shanty (and the charter school, also, if possible) to:

  1. Contact the school office to get permission to raise the flag on that day
  2. Speak briefly on the announcements about what the Anniversary of Scouting is (See wording below).
  3. Remind all scouts to wear uniform to school. They will earn a patch.

Intercom Announcement Wording

"February 8th is the ______ Anniversary of the Boy Scout Program. In the year 1910, a British Army Officer named Baden-Powell incorporated the Boy Scouts of America in Washington, DC.

"He started the program to teach boys basic skills in First Aid and Outdoor Survival. He believed in service to others, as well as duty to God and Country. Boy Scouts learn these skills through camping and other fun activities. Today the Boy Scout program is made up of 5 million scouts and leaders.

"Today, Scouts from Pack 002 raised the school's American flag and will now lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of the Boy Scouts' ____ birthday."

Calculating the Anniversary

The BSA was incorporated in 1910, so subtract 1910 from the current year. For example, it is the 97th anniversary in 2007 (2007 - 1910 = 97), and the 98th anniversary in 2008 (2008 - 1910 = 98).
